What are you doing now?
After graduating in June 2014 I joined IBM’s graduate scheme based at their main UK office in Hursley. I was part of a team creating a cloud based integration testing tool. After 2 years I decided to move on, and I am now part of the server team for a small smart-home company PassivSystems, using the Scala programming language. We develop a smart IoT home energy services platform which can control a customer’s energy assets such as hot water, heating, and solar panels.
Which was your favourite module, and why?
It is hard to choose just one! I really enjoyed the advanced programming projects, artificial intelligence and computer graphics modules. It was great to learn Python and Haskell in the advanced programming projects module and create some cool programs with them. I have always been intrigued by AI, so it was really interesting to gain an insight into the basics of how it all works. It was also fun and very satisfying to create a working solar system with meteors reacting to each planets gravity in the graphics module.
What advice would you give to current students?
Have fun, ask for help if you need it, and don’t stress too much.
