Estimating Carbon Emissions from Conference Travel

Traditional in-person academic conferences have for centuries facilitated collaboration, networking and the presentation and sharing of ideas. However, increasingly consideration is being given to the sustainability of such conferences, given the emissions-intensive long-distance air-travel that is often incurred. Organisers therefore may wish to consider the environmental impact of a conference, alongside other factors such as geographic representation and accessibility.

Thus, within this project I sought to develop a tool that would allow organisers of academic conferences to make predictions about who might attend a conference and explore the estimated resulting emissions. Additionally, the tool facilitates exploration of non-environmental factors such as time-zone differences if attendees were to join remotely.
