Modern navigation applications provide routes using roads and paths, with some taking into account elevation data. This data is often used to evaluate the difficulty of a suggested route, but why stop there? In this exhibit we explore how elevation data can form the basis of routing decisions rather than paths/roads. This facilitates true terrain-first routing, providing optimal routes through challenging terrain even in the absence of paths or trails.
