Alumni visit School of Computer Science

A group of alumni who studied in the school over 20 years ago (graduating classes of 1994, 1995 and 1996) organised an informal reunion last month. During their stay in town they organised a visit to the school, where they sampled the school coffee, acquired a coveted CS mug and reminisced around the photo boards. The group were given an overview of the present day Computer Science at St Andrews and proceeded on a tour of the department with current Head of School, Simon Dobson, Professor Emeritus, Ron Morrison and Dave Munro.

Graduation Reception June 2018

Congratulations to our Senior Honours Class of 2018, MSci Honours students and our PhD students Dr Adam Barwell, Dr Martin McCaffery, Dr Gonzalo Mendez and Dr Long Thai, who graduated last month. Students were invited to a reception in the School prior to the ceremony, to celebrate their achievement with staff, friends and family.

Our graduates will move on to a wide variety of interesting and challenging employment and further study opportunities, and we wish them all well with their future careers.

Professor Aaron Quigley to Join ACM Distinguished Speaker Program

Congratulations to Aaron on being appointed as a Distinguished Speaker for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The esteemed Distinguished Speaker Program brings together international thought leaders from academia, industry, and government to give presentations to ACM chapters, members, and the greater IT community in a variety of venues and formats. The outreach program coordinates speaker lectures to consider the most important challenges in computing today and facilitates professional networking.

Professor Quigley is Chair of Human Computer Interaction in the School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews. His research interests include surface and multi-display computing, body worn interaction, human computer interaction, pervasive and ubiquitous computing and information visualisation.

User-Centred Interaction Design

Students undertaking CS5042 User Centred Interaction Design were pictured prototyping their design ideas during creative thinking, and hands-on sessions earlier this month. UCID provides experience with modern design methodologies, introduces the philosophy of interaction design and involves working with actual clients.

The module delivered by Miguel Nacenta is a compulsory element for students studying on our MSc in Human Computer Interaction, a popular addition to our MSc Portfolio.

Senior Honours Poster and Demo Sessions

Our talented Senior Honours students are pictured presenting posters and software artefacts to second markers, interested staff and students last week. The impressive range of year-long projects included, plagiarism detection tools, augmented books with AR Visualsiation, Network science in GPUs, evaluating Full coverage display, a Blockchain construction toolkit, Intrusion detection systems evaluation and many more demonstrating cutting edge research areas. The successful session was organised by Kasim Terzic, projects coordinator in the School. We wish our students well with their forthcoming exams and look forward to seeing them at June graduation.

Junior Honours: Software Team Project 2017

Earlier today our hard working Junior Honours students presented their Team Projects. The projects involve substantial team based software engineering and rely heavily on collective development. There are many aspects of software and professional development along with considerable inter-team and intra-team collaborations. This year the students were asked to develop a software product intended for use by the School of Medicine. The teams demonstrated lots of creativity in developing back end, HCI and Machine learning aspects for their artefact. Thanks to all the students, supervisors and coordinators for their hard work this year. We wish all our junior honours students success with their forthcoming exams and we look forward to seeing them again for senior honours in September.
